CBDC

A digital form of national currency issued directly by a central bank.

Stablecoins & Payments Also called central bank digital currency, digital rupee, e-rupee

A CBDC is central bank money in digital form, distinct from a stablecoin because there is no private issuer and no reserve question. India’s e-rupee pilot, launched by the Reserve Bank of India, is among the largest live retail programmes.

Design debates centre on privacy, offline use, whether balances earn interest and what it would mean for commercial bank deposits.
