Bitcoin is the original cryptocurrency, released as open-source software in January 2009 by the pseudonymous developer Satoshi Nakamoto. It runs on a public blockchain secured by proof-of-work mining, with no central bank, company or administrator behind it.

Its supply is fixed at 21 million BTC and new issuance halves roughly every four years, which is why Bitcoin is often described as a scarce or “hard” digital asset. Most traders quote it as BTC, and its price moves usually set the direction for the wider market.
