According to Li, the perpetrator targeted Tectonic’s governance token, TONIC, which reportedly maintained a 20% collateral factor alongside low market liquidity during the attack.

The attacker then transferred those tokens into Tectonic alongside roughly $5 million in USDC. Following two preliminary test loans, the bad actor reportedly pushed through a single transaction valued at approximately $120 million.

That transaction allegedly extracted USDC, USDT, WBTC, WETH, and CRO from Tectonic lending markets. Researcher Awoo estimated the perpetrator risked about $5.6 million of their own capital during the exploit, while copycat actors subsequently managed to siphon around $2 million.

In the wake of the security incident, Crypto.com CEO Kris Marszalek confirmed that the platform’s mobile app and centralized exchange maintained normal operations throughout the Cronos network disruption.

He noted that the firm’s security team also lent assistance to the Tectonic investigation. His comments applied specifically to assets managed via Crypto.com services rather than funds deposited independently into Tectonic.

Investigations into the exploit are ongoing, and Tectonic operates as an independent decentralized lending platform on Cronos. Marszalek additionally promised to release a comprehensive post-mortem report once investigations conclude.
