A parallel network with worthless tokens used to trial code before launch.
Testnets mirror the production network so developers can deploy contracts, break things and test upgrades without risking real value. Tokens are handed out free by faucets.
Mainnet is the live network where transactions carry real economic weight. Any protocol change worth shipping is exercised on a testnet first.
